Trading up - when should I replace my medical refrigerator?

2 min read
Buying a medical refrigerator is a serious investment. It’s also an essential one if you are storing temperature-sensitive products such as vaccines, veterinary medical products and botulinum toxins.

It’s important that you get the most out of your product for as long as possible to maximise your return on investment.

But when is the right time to accept that the time has come to replace your old medical fridge with a new one?

How long should my medical refrigerator last?

A medical fridge should work efficiently for its stated lifespan – which is broadly accepted  to be around five years - IF it is installed in the right location, stocked correctly and serviced regularly by a COMCAT qualified engineer.

Our Best Practice guides provide useful information on how to position and stock your fridge to get the best performance from it: https://www.lec-medical.co.uk/en-gb/support/best-practice

Spotting the warning signs

We’ve all lived with appliances in the home that are showing signs of wear and tear and often only replace white goods when they break down.

But don’t be tempted to apply the same principle to your medical fridge.

Medical refrigerators like our Pharmacy Plus range are expertly designed to keep cold chain medical products and toxins within the stable temperature range of +2ºC to +8ºC which is essential to ensure they work effectively.

If your fridge is not working to its full capacity your valuable products might be at risk of being wasted.

Here are some simple but crucial warning signs that you should never ignore:

  • Inconsistent temperature

Pharmacy Plus fridges have a clear and easy-to-read temperature display panel. If your fridge temperature fluctuates outside the +2ºC to +8ºC range by even the smallest amount you need to act quickly to remedy it.

  • Unusual noises

Don’t dismiss any strange sounds coming from your fridge as an acceptable sign of aging - they are often the first indication of a problem.

  •  Wear and tear

Even minor looking damage such as rust or small cracks can affect the performance of your fridge. Inspect it regularly and be especially vigilant when checking that seals are intact.

  • Avoid false economy

As with cars, there might come a point when your medical fridge needs more repairs, more frequently – and at greater cost.

A new fridge is not only more cost-effective than repeat repair bills – it is also far more reliable.

  • Time to say goodbye

Take care of your medical fridge and you will get years of efficient, cost-effective use from it.

But the minute it shows signs of being ‘past its best’ is the time to seriously consider replacing it.

Our sales team will be more than happy to talk you through finding the best replacement.
