January saw the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) issue guidance on the correct storage of vaccines with the aim of ensuring all vaccines are stored correctly.
The NPSA received 260 reports of incorrect vaccine storage between 1st January 2005 and 1st April 2009. Within this time period, 50 million does of childhood vaccines were distributed throughout the UK.
The Rapid Response Report calls for various policies and procedures to be put in place with relation to vaccine cold chain storage. This includes reviewing the refrigerator temperature at regular intervals and having a due course of action should any vaccines be stored outside of the manufacturer’s recommendations.
